Something Just Ain’t Right

"By Al Alatunji"

When a father on his way to or at the ballpark to watch his favorite team must think about what he would have to do if a shooting occurred at or near the game then something just ain’t right. When a parent or grandparent on a heavenly Saturday or Sunday early afternoon at a Little League game at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in North Trenton or Joel Medley West End Little League Field there to watch their child or grandchild play baseball and gunshots are heard near the field and now have to hustle onto the field to collect their child while using their body to protect the child from a stray bullet something just ain’t right.

Something just ain’t right when teachers are leaving the teaching profession in droves not because they are burned out from all the state and district interference making it more challenging to be able to do what they want to do which is teach, but out of fear of some crazed person armed as if going to war open fire on them and their students.

Something just ain’t right when you are in your 20s and 30s and you want to go out to meet people and/or find that special someone to spend sunrises and sunsets with, but you find yourself staying home out of concern that the bar or club you go to might be the scene of the next mass shooting.

When you go into your place of worship, be it a mosque, synagogue, church, temple, hall to celebrate life and are forced to look around to see if someone in the facility might be so troubled that they pull out an assault weapon and begin taking lives then something just ain’t right. Something just ain’t right when workers at grocery stores that have a predominately Black customer base have to worry if some demented, Satan-possessed white racist will target the store as part of some half-bakedbizarre plan that they have developed on a computer in their basement apartment of their mommy’s home.

When you decide that you will no longer shop at a grocery store because it is where a predominately Black customer base shops, but you are fearful that you might be in the store when the demented, Satan possessed white racist acts out their perverted racist fantasy then something just ain’t right.

Something just ain’t right as the parent or grandparent of a child on their way to school you find yourself praying that they will return safely back home and not in a body bag. Something just ain’t right when those parents and grandparents are forced to wonder if moving to another country might be the only way their child might one day become a parent or grandparent. Something just ain’t right when you go to a movie theater, restaurant, or the mall and your first thoughts are centered around finding the nearest exits to escape in the event of a mass shooting.

Congress recently passed a measure initially crafted at preventing weapons that should only be used in a war, if then, from ending up in the hands of children and emotionally and mentally unbalanced people. The bipartisan measure worked out was hailed as the first major gun control measure passed by Congress in decades.

It was not what President Joe Biden and most Americans wanted. It was the only measure that could pass Congress. The measure fails to ban any weapons and is highly questionable if it will save any lives.

Basically it was a shrewd ploy by Republicans primarily in the US Senate to remove an election year issue that Democrats might try to use against Republican candidates for the US Senate and House of Representatives. As usual, the good-hearted Democrats rolled over for the mean heard hearted Republicans. The measure passed and sent to President Biden is not worth the paper it was typed on.

White supremacists, and other Right wing domestic terrorists could not be more thrilled with Congress’ imitation of a Japanese Non theatre performance.

Ironically, even if Congress would have found the wisdom and the courage to ban assault weapons the weapon of choose for those sick and evil people who commit the mass shootings, the white supremacists and domestic terrorists would not be upset.

If their goal is to see the elimination of Black people, they do not have to worry themselves with carrying out diabolical large-scale attacks like the one which occurred at the Buffalo, NY grocery store. They can just sit back, get them a couple of corndogs and several six packs and watch the various news stories of the Black-on-Black gun violence rampant throughout the US.

“The Blacks or whatever they call themselves this week sure are making our job easier. Each weekend they be out there killing each other off. They be doing it in Chicago and Philly. What is it them gangbanger called themselves Craps and Bleeds?”

“That is Crips and Bloods. Boy, you are one dumb red neck.”

“Whatever, them gangbangers love to kill each other. Lucky for us they don’t come after us.”

“You don’t have to worry about that happening. As long as they be listening to all that gangsters rap music and watching all those movies and videos glorifying the thug life, we have nothing to fear.”
