KAMAU KUJICHAGULIA: A LEGACY OF SPEAKING TRUTH

Trenton, on November 11, 2023, Kamau Kujichagulia founder and publisher of The Nubian News/El Latino News is honored by the North Clinton Avenue Benevolence Project, Inc.., with its “Speak Truth To Power Award”.

There are many words that come to mind when one hears the name Kamau Kujichagulia. One such word is self-determined, which in Swahili is Kujichagulia.

Kujichagulia is one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa and reflects the right and duty of Blacks to define and name themselves, as well as to create and speak for themselves. Kamau Kujichagulia created and has used The Nubian News to help define and speak for Blacks in the Greater Trenton area, the state, US and throughout the world.

Since the launch of The Nubian News in September 1989, Kamau Kujichagulia has been an advocate, promoter, cheerleader for Black, Latinx and other people of color obtaining social economic, political and spiritual power. At the same time, he has been a leading voice, at times the only voice to challenge AmeriKKKa’s racism and the system of white supremacy.

He has made sure The Nubian News remains immersed in the issues, topics and concerns that impact Blacks and Latinx lives that other media outlets refuse to address. He has tackled those issues, topics and concerns head on and fortright. He has not been concerned about being politically correct.

Since the inception of The Nubian News, Kamau Kujichagulia as founder, publisher and now publisher emeritus has remained unapologetic, unwavering, uncorrupted and unbowed in the pursuit of justice for Black, Latinx and other people of color. Unapologetic, unwavering, uncorrupted and unbowed while speaking truth to power.

Other words that come to mind when speaking of Kamau Kujichagulia are teacher, but not just teacher, but righteous teacher, World traveler who has been an ambassador extraordinaire for Trenton and always Black People.

Entrepreneur and Black businessman who made sure that Black and Latinx readers had their paper with little if any advertising support from Trenton, county or state governmental entities or area corporate and business concerns.

Connoisseur and epicurean of Blackness who loves Black people and is committed to their uplift, advancement and empowerment, A man of letters who enjoys learning.

Still other words come to mind when one thinks of Kamau Kujichagulia. Such words as Pan Africanist, revolutionary, Black nationalist, humanitarian, globalist, visionary.

But perhaps the words which Kamau Kujichagulia finds most meaningful to him have been son, brother, husband, father and grandfather all of which are proceed with the words outstanding, wonderful, exemplary and loving.

The Speak Truth To Power Award will be presented to Kamau Kujichagulia at the North Clinton Avenue Benevolence Project’s first annual fundraiser dinner in the Washington Ballroom of the Trenton Country Club located on Sullivan Way in Trenton from 3:00 to 9:00 PM.
