Trump returns to power after unprecedented comeback, emboldened to reshape American institutions

Declaring that government faces a “crisis of trust," Trump said in his inaugural address that under his administration “our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced."

On Monday, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President, pledging a “revolution of common sense” as Republicans took full control of Washington, aiming to transform the country's institutions. He vowed to “completely and totally reverse” the policies of his predecessor.

Having triumphed over impeachments, criminal charges, and assassination attempts, Trump is set to act quickly, signing executive orders to curb border crossings, boost fossil fuel production, and dismantle diversity and inclusion programs across the federal government.

In his inaugural address, Trump emphasized that the government is facing a “crisis of trust” and promised that under his leadership, "our sovereignty will be reclaimed," and "the scales of justice will be rebalanced." He claimed a mandate to reverse what he called a "horrible betrayal," vowing to return the people's faith, wealth, democracy, and freedom. He concluded with, “From this moment on, America’s decline is over.”

His executive orders are part of his broader goal of “restoring America” and carrying out his “revolution of common sense.”

The inauguration was altered due to cold weather, with the ceremony held indoors at the Capitol Rotunda—marking the first such change in 40 years. The traditional parade was also replaced with a gathering at a downtown arena. Trump supporters who had gathered at the Capitol were redirected to other locations to watch the proceedings.

Vice President JD Vance took the oath of office first, followed by Trump at noon, who used both a family Bible and the one from Abraham Lincoln’s 1861 inauguration.

High-profile billionaires and tech leaders, including Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, Sundar Pichai, and Elon Musk, were in attendance. Musk is expected to play a key role in reducing federal spending and personnel.

Trump's day began with a prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, followed by a meeting with outgoing President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at the White House, which was a sharp contrast to their previous interactions.

Trump's political comeback is unprecedented in U.S. history. He was ousted from office four years ago amid the COVID-19 pandemic but maintained his influence within the Republican Party despite numerous legal challenges. He successfully capitalized on voter frustration over inflation and illegal immigration.

In his inaugural address, Trump again accused his political enemies of prosecuting him unfairly and vowed to bring about “fair, equal and impartial justice.” He also noted that his swearing-in took place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, honoring the civil rights leader’s legacy and thanking Black and Latino voters for their support.

Trump becomes the first president convicted of a felony, related to falsifying business records, but he is resolute in his promise to “preserve, protect, and defend” the Constitution.

After his political resurrection, Trump is prepared to implement a more aggressive agenda, including reducing immigration, imposing tariffs, and reversing Democratic policies on climate and social issues. He has also promised retribution for his political opponents, with personal loyalty being a key factor in his administration appointments.

As Biden left office, he issued pardons to shield his family members from potential prosecution, citing the ongoing attacks against them. Biden also issued pardons to individuals targeted by Trump’s anger, acknowledging the “exceptional circumstances.”

Trump is set to move quickly with his agenda, with political, business, and tech leaders adjusting to accommodate his return to power. He faces divided opposition from Democrats, some of whom are still considering whether to collaborate with or oppose his administration.

Internationally, Trump’s “America First” policy is under scrutiny, especially with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and tensions in Gaza. Trump hinted at expanding U.S. territory, mentioning Greenland and the Panama Canal, as well as ambitions to send American astronauts to Mars, aligning with Elon Musk’s goals.

He also promised to lift the ban on TikTok, an app deemed a security risk by the U.S., as part of his executive actions.

Trump’s plans to secure the southern border include declaring a national emergency, limiting refugee numbers, and deploying the military. He also aims to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, a long-time target of conservatives.

His executive orders are expected to increase fossil fuel production and reverse Biden-era policies, including a ban on new oil and gas drilling.

With Congress under Republican control, Trump’s administration is poised to further dismantle Biden’s policies and enact their own agenda.
